GGT

Background

  • Gamma-glutamyl transferase; present in hepatocytes and biliary epithelium
  • Sensitive but not specific for liver disease

Normal Values

  • Normal: 0-51 U/L

Interpretation

  • Primary use: confirm hepatobiliary source of elevated alkaline phosphatase
  • Elevated in alcohol use, medications, biliary obstruction, and virtually any liver disease
  • Not elevated in bone disease (distinguishes biliary from bone source of elevated ALP)
  • Isolated GGT elevation is of limited clinical significance
