GGT
Background
- Gamma-glutamyl transferase; present in hepatocytes and biliary epithelium
- Sensitive but not specific for liver disease
Normal Values
- Normal: 0-51 U/L
Interpretation
- Primary use: confirm hepatobiliary source of elevated alkaline phosphatase
- Elevated in alcohol use, medications, biliary obstruction, and virtually any liver disease
- Not elevated in bone disease (distinguishes biliary from bone source of elevated ALP)
- Isolated GGT elevation is of limited clinical significance
